Canon 1Ds MkII - 17-40mm f/4 lens - f/16 @ 1/2sec. - ISO 100 NOVEMBER 2007 Swallowtail butterfly This magnificent swallowtail butterfly was photographed as it bathed in later afternoon light on grass stems along a scrubland track in the Algarve, Portugal. Canon 1D MkII - 300mm f/4 IS lens - f/6.3 @ 1/90 sec. - ISO 200 OCTOBER 2007 Greater Flamingos in flight At dusk skeins of Greater Flamingo descend from their daytime feeding grounds to roost on the exposed salt-pans of the Algarve. Canon 1D MkII - 300mm f/4 IS lens - f/8 @ 1/500 second - ISO 200 SEPTEMBER 2007 Northumbrian beach at sunset A remote expanse of beach along the Northumbrian coast at sunset is a magical place to be as a single shaft of sunlight caresses the sand made perfect by the out going tide. Canon 5D - 17-40mm f/4 lens - f/16 @ 1 second - ISO 100 AUGUST 2007 Dark Peak waterfall This superb waterfall is located along one of the many brooks that tumble down from the bogs and mires that dominant the Kinder Scout plateau. I timed my exposures as the sun hid behind a cloud in order to retain the highlights. Canon 1Ds MkII - 17-40mm f/4 lens - f/16 @ 3seconds - ISO 100 JULY 2007 Emerald Damselfly (male) An abundant species throughout the Dark Peak region of the Peak District National Park where acidic moorland pools occur. Unusually, it's the female emerald colouration which gives the species it's common name. Canon 1D MkII - 180mm f/3.5 macro lens - f/11@ 1/60 second - ISO 100 JUNE 2007 Cistanche phelypaea This strangely beautiful looking angiospermic root parasitic plant was photographed amongst the sand dunes of the Ria Formosa, Algarve, Portugal. It totally depends on its host for water, minerals and organic nutrients. Canon 1Ds MkII - 500mm f/4 IS lens - f/5.6 @ 1/90 second - ISO 100 MAY 2007 Double rainbow Taken during a thunder storm over the Cheshire village of Kettleshulme on the edge of the Peak District. Canon 1Ds MkII - 17-40mm f/4 lens - f/11 @ 1/15 second - ISO 100 APRIL 2007 Dunlins An impressionistic view of dunlins taken at dawn on the salt-pans of the Ria Formosa, Portugal. Canon 1Ds MkII - 500mm f/4 IS lens - f/5.6 @ 3.2 seconds - ISO 100 MARCH 2007 Total Lunar Eclipse During the total phase, the Moon's brightness dropped a thousand fold and took on a copper-orange colour. This odd appearance is due to the fact that Earth's atmosphere filters out all the blue and green light so that only orange and red sunlight reaches the Moon. Canon 1Ds MkII - 500mm f/4 IS lens plus 1.4 x extender - f/6.3 @ 1/4 second - ISO 400 FEBRUARY 2007 Ice Formation When the temperature is several degrees below zero the pools of acidic water that pepper the bleak plateau of Kinder Scout the highest point within the Peak District National Park are transformed into magical ice landscapes that are intricate and delicate. Canon 5D - 180mm f/3.5 macro lens - f/16 @ 1 second - ISO 100 JANUARY 2007 European Scorpion - Buthus ibericus A recent trip to the Algarve, Portugal was incredibly productive though I was surprised to find this female scorpion sunning herself while out looking for butterflies and lizards to photograph. Scorpions are normally nocturnal creatures, preferring to spend daylight hours hidden way under a rock or under bark. Canon 1Ds MkII - 180mm f/3.5 macro lens - f/16 @ 1/6 second - ISO 100 ___________________________________________________________________________________________ all content © Geoff Simpson Photography Ltd 2000-2008 • all rights reserved |
