Northumbrian beach at sunset

A remote expanse of beach along the Northumbrian coast at sunset is a magical place to be as a single shaft of sunlight caresses the sand made perfect by the out going tide.

AUGUST 2007

Dark Peak waterfall

This superb waterfall is located along one of the many brooks that tumble down from the bogs and mires that dominant the Kinder Scout plateau. I timed my exposures as the sun hid behind a cloud in order to retain the highlights.

An abundant species throughout the Dark Peak region of the Peak District National Park where acidic moorland pools occur. Unusually, it's the female emerald colouration which gives the species it's common name.

MARCH  2007

Total Lunar Eclipse

During the total phase, the Moon's brightness dropped a thousand fold and took on a copper-orange colour. This odd appearance is due to the fact that Earth's atmosphere filters out all the blue and green light so that only orange and red sunlight reaches the Moon.

JANUARY 2007

European Scorpion - Buthus ibericus

A recent trip to the Algarve, Portugal was incredibly productive though I was surprised to find this female scorpion sunning herself while out looking for butterflies and lizards to photograph. Scorpions are normally nocturnal creatures, preferring to spend daylight hours hidden way under a rock or under bark.
