Broomrape - Cistanche phelypaea

This strangely beautiful looking angiospermic root parasitic plant  totally depends on its host for water, minerals and organic nutrients. Photographed amongst the sand dunes on the edge of Monte Gordo pine forest, Algarve. Cistanche phelypaea prefers arid conditions provided by sand dunes and salt marshes along the coastline where suitable host plants occur.

Canon 5D MkII - 70-200mm f2.8L IS lens - f/8 @ 1/60 second - ISO 100 - Canon Angle-Finder C - Gitzo G1548 tripod with G2270M head
