What are dermal fillers?

If you have ever thought about getting facial treatment for lines and wrinkles, you may have considered dermal fillers; this type of injection can not only get rid of unsightly lines, it can also build up sunken areas and add volume to the face where it has been lost over the years. Aging can be difficult for some people and facial injections are fast becoming the treatment of choice for patients looking to make their complexion look fresher and more youthful. Facial injections can be seen as a great alternative to invasive surgery, although they don’t give a permanent result, and many people who would like to look and feel younger can do so without having to resort to costly surgical procedures.

Dermal fillers are made up primarily of hyaluronic acid – which is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body and is used to lubricate the joints and to keep the skin supple. Because the acid is already present in the system, the dermal filler that is injected will eventually start to break down into the body, leaving no trace behind. This will typically occur after 3 to 5 months, after which time you will need to get a repeat treatment if you would like to maintain the results long-term. There are some permanent filler injections available but most surgeons are reluctant to use them because it cannot be predicted what will happen to the liquid if it is injected permanently into the body. Some patients also use this sort of treatment as a trial run for a facelift, in which case the temporary nature of the results is a bonus. Most patients who request anti-ageing treatment will just be looking for a slight change here and there, rather than a complete overhaul; this is a good way to keep the complexion looking fresh, without it being obvious that some work has been carried out.
